o ilhavense
2022
Coloured cardboard, newspaper, photographic paper, posca markers
32 X 23 cm; 35 x 30 cm; 70 x 60 cm
This project arises from the studio exercise of searching and transferring the form present in the space between typographic characters of the centenary newspaper "O Ilhavense". The thick lines and the rounded blue serifs of the font attracted my eye and I started to explore their design and the outline that separates them from each other.
Over the last year, I have maintained close and constant contact with the people and culture of Ílhavo. Their connection to the sea, their cult of the community and their graphic footprint are remarkable and led me to execute this visual investigation. At a certain point in the process by taking some of these drawings directly to the sea, to the beach, there was an attempt to reinforce this key element, starting to dictate to the abstract language present in the work some associations with the tangible, recognisable universe. Through this work I intended to reflect and then communicate a little of what is my aesthetic experience of this place and the people who inhabit it. It is up to the form and colour attached to this work to transmit a narrative that is both visual and grotesque of this experience.
